New York Botanical Garden, Diatom Research
The LuEsther T. Mertz Library of The New York Botanical Garden has digitized a group of materials relating to diatom research. Diatoms are a major group of algae and one of the most common types of phytoplankton. Notable items in this sub collection: the Atlas der Diatomaceen-Kunde by Adolf Schmidt, a basic work in the field of diatom micropaleontology that is almost inaccessible to the profession, because of its rarity and its bulk. These works were published in Leipzig starting in 1874 and continued until 1902. Also in thecollection is David Boyd Ward’s manuscript List of Hudson River Diatoms, another rare work, published in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 1891. Digitization for this project was made possible by a generous grant from the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO).
